Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming.

What if the colours clash?

What if the kids refuse to wear it?

What if you don’t feel comfortable?

Take a deep breath — it doesn’t have to be complicated. As a family photographer in the Garden Route, I guide every client through wardrobe choices so that your photos feel natural, timeless and beautifully you.

Here’s exactly what works — and why.

1. Start with Mom’s Outfit First

This is my golden rule.

Choose something you feel confident and comfortable in — not something trendy, tight or unfamiliar.

When mom feels beautiful:

  • The whole session feels relaxed
  • Your confidence shows in the photos
  • Everything else falls into place

Flowy dresses, soft fabrics and neutral tones photograph beautifully in the forests, beaches and mountains around George.

2. Stick to a Soft, Coordinated Colour Palette

You don’t need to match. You need to coordinate.

The Garden Route’s natural tones are:

  • Greens (forest)
  • Neutrals (sand)
  • Blues (ocean)
  • Warm golden light

Beautiful colour combinations:

  • Cream, beige, soft blue
  • Sage, neutral denim, white
  • Rust, cream, olive
  • Soft pastels for beach sessions

Avoid:

  • Bright neon colours
  • Large logos
  • Busy patterns
  • Everyone in identical white shirts and jeans

Think harmony, not uniform.

3. Dress for the Location

Your outfit should complement your session setting.

Forest Sessions:

  • Earth tones
  • Linen, cotton, soft textures
  • Layers

Beach Sessions:

  • Light fabrics that move in the wind
  • Barefoot works beautifully
  • Soft neutrals or muted blues

Mountain or Open Fields:

  • Slightly bolder tones work well
  • Layering adds dimension

If you’re unsure — I'll help you choose based on the location we select.

4. Comfort Over Perfection (Especially for Kids)

If children are uncomfortable, it shows.

Choose:

  • Soft fabrics
  • Clothes they can move in
  • Shoes they can walk in (or go barefoot)

When kids can move freely, we get genuine laughter instead of forced smiles.

5. Avoid Last-Minute Outfit Stress

Plan outfits at least one week before your session.

  • Lay everything out together.
  • Take a quick photo of the outfits side by side.
  • Make adjustments early.

The goal is calm energy on the day of your session — not rushing and frustration.

6. What Photographs Timelessly (Even 10 Years From Now)

Trends come and go. Your family photos shouldn’t feel dated.

Timeless always wins:

  • Neutral tones
  • Soft textures
  • Minimal patterns
  • Classic silhouettes

Your future self will thank you.

The Most Important Thing

Always remember that the most beautiful photos aren’t about perfect outfits.

They’re about connection. When you feel comfortable and confident, that is what shines through.

And that’s what truly matters.
